Description

Newspaper article about Corporal Whitey, the RCAF mascot. Whitey first made his appearance at the airport back in 1943 when it was being used as a training base for Royal Air Force personnel. Of dubious parentage but showing suspicious signs of Yorkshire and Spaniel, he was brought into the base by Manager L.W. Hicks." When the war ended, Whitey was soon on the staff of the Trans Canada Airlines. With the postwar expansion of the RCAF and the return of the airmen, Whitey "tendered his resignation" to TCA and was once again an institution among the airmen at the station. In 1952, the North Bay Daily Nugget ran this story about his promotion to Corporal Whitey. See 999.47.12 for photo of Whitey at the airport.
