Description

Black & white photograph showing the location of the Bank of Nova Scotia (Feb. 13, 1952) on Main St. W. Photo includes: Pillars on either side; "Bank of Nova Scotia" across top, under a peaked roof with the insignia under the peak. The doorway is slightly recessed, also has "Bank of Nova Scotia" above it. To the left is "Tip Top Tailors". To the right is "Cochrane Dunlop Hardware". A number of cars are parallel-parked along the street. There are 2 women, 1 with stroller at "Sally Shop". Another lady in winter attire is ahead. Street where cars are parked appears to have snow. Comparisons to current locations as of 2020 below: Both Tip Top Tailors and Sally Shops Ltd offered unique retail experiences from the early 1950s-1970s at 130 and 132 Main Street West. Miyakoi Asian Cuisine operated out the building until recently. The Bank of Nova Scotia was built in 1926 at 126 Main St. W and operated as a bank until the approximately 1970. The Abbey Cards and Gifts opened in the unique building in 1975 and is still in operation. Cochrane Dunlop Hardware was built 1911 at 122 Main St. W and open until 1981. Lefebvre’s operated out of the building until a tragic fire 2012. The storefront is currently being restored. Newton Meats operated out of 118 Main Street West and is also within the Cochrane block building. Woolworth's department store is also visible in the background and was in the building that is as of 2020, H& R block.
