Description

This black and white photo shows Betty Goulais being carried into her guide boat unconscious after attempting to swim from Newman Island (of the Manitou Islands) to the North Bay Wharf. She swam 11 miles over the course of 6 hours before severe winds and waves blew her about 4 miles off course and rendered her unconscious. She was 1 mile from shore. Nugget reporter Colin Vezina was on the scene to help. Notice how the composition of the photograph echoes McNeill's Drowining Victim photograph. Or it may resemble other works like Caravaggio's The Taking of Christ or Jacques-Louis David's The Death of Marat.
