Description

(1808-1894)." A photograph of a hand-colored lithographic plate after the German painter Carl Werner, showing the Interior of the Greek Chapel (Center of the World) in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It includes a large hall with rows of big columns. Above it there is an upper floor decorated with statues placed in small wall niches, a round balcony, and hanging lamps, along with decorative arches. The floor is covered with detailed geometric patterns, and at the center of the place there is a small vase known as the “Omphalos” or “navel of the earth,” positioned opposite the Holy Sepulchre. This plate was included by Hisham Khatib in his book "Jerusalem, Bethlehem & the Holy Land & Egypt: Paintings by Carl Werner (1808-1894)."
