Description

Jean d'Aire is a nude study of the same figure that is part of Burghers of Calais, one of Auguste Rodin’s most famous works. In the completed work, Rodin depicts the moment that six prominent citizens of the French city of Calais offer their lives to the English King Edward III in order to stop his attack on the city during the Hundred Years' War in 1347. Rather than showing the figures as idealized heroes, Rodin emphasizes the anguish of each man, representing sacrifice and raw human emotion. The figure of Jean d'Aire has clenched fists and a set jaw, resigned to his fate.
