Description

Sand Box is part of Hitoshi Nakazato's exploration of geometric composition and textured surface in printmaking. During the period, Nakazato experimented with innovative printmaking techniques, including his self-developed sand serigraphy, which introduces texture as an integral element of the printed surface. Created in 1979, the same year Nakazato established the Print Studio at the University of Pennsylvania, the print represents an early example of the process-driven experimentation that would shape both his artistic practice and his nearly four decades of teaching at Penn. Related examples of Sand Box are also held in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
