Description

The Kelly Family Gates open up to Charles Addams Hall, the center for fine arts at Penn, and capture the quirky spirit of artist Charles Addams, Penn alumnus, for whom the fine arts building is named. Designed by Mark Lueders, Penn alumnus and former fine arts faculty member, the Gates make reference to the fictional Addams Family character Thing, who is shown as a disembodied hand. Lueders recruited fellow faculty members and students as his models to create his design, incorporating casts of their hands using tools that relate to the making of paintings, drawings, sculpture, clay, and digital art. There is a total of 56 hands from 46 different people with their respective fine arts tools.
