William Blake Death Mask

William Blake Death Mask

Description

This realistic plaster sculpture depicts the face of poet William Blake (1758-1827) with closed eyes and a straight long nose above a closed, down-turned mouth. I located multiple versions of this work: some painted, some cast in bronze, and others that are also in plaster. The original mask of William Blake was made in bronze in 1823. Very few original masks of William Blake by De Ville exist, with copies in numerous museums. The well-known De Ville sculpture is usually reproduced in the round - often with neck and shoulders. (Included below is an intact version from the market together with the damaged version that is in the Bullough Collection.)
