Description

An early work by Ruzicka depicted a view of the Brooklyn Bridge in black and white from across the East River with New York City buildings in the background The central focus of the image, printed from a wood engraving is one of the stone towers from which the steel cables emanate in downward facing arcs. Several small boats move through the river under the bridge. Ruzicka placed a partially shown three-sail vessel in the lower left comer, a device which pulls the viewer into the image. This realistic portrayal uses the varied lines used in wood engravings to create textures such as hatching and grids adding shades of grey to the imagery.
