Description

With a book in his left hand, Saint Nicholas holds up his right hand in a traditional blessing. I assumed that the full figure of the saint beneath the riza is not completely painted. 6 Only his face, hands and two angels to either side of his halo that show through the openings in the metal are painted on the panel. The riza covering the panel is worked with repousse providing details of the saint including those on his crown and vestments. The three- dimensional halo also has been added to reflect light for the saint. Saint Nicholas, from the 4th Century, known as the "Wonderworker" due to his many miracles, is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, thieves, and children.
