Description

This ink drawing depicts the outline of a male figure in profile surrounded with linear patterns in a loose oval. A shadow of the profile mimics the back of the figure, also within the waving lines. Based on the title, the image was likely created for a book written by Cocteau about WWI, first published in 1923. The story is of the youth, Thomas, who at the time Paris is falling to the Germans, assumes the identity of Guillaume, a man old enough to join the army of noble ancestry. In addition to his love story with the daughter of a society star the story also recounts the horrors of war he experiences.
