This work, part of the artist's "Tonglen Series" is composed of vertical, erose stripes in several shades of grey, varying depending on the density of the graphite. The two colors of the stripes reference the two steps of breathing used in Buddhist Tonglen meditation for overcoming fear and/or suffering. Breathing in takes away fear and pain and breathing out sends joy and happiness, provides relief, and expands the practitioners compassion to all who suffer.
