This work features Lord Kitchener in command holding a helmet and sitting om horseback facing the (viewer's) right. Irish-born Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916) played a role in early World War I, served in South Africa in the Second Boer War, and reorganized the Indian Army as its commander-in-chief. Kitchener and his horse take up the majority of the composition with two other figures as well as a group of people in the background. The image was rendered using wide lines and blocks of areas with tones of grey creating high contrasts of light and dark.
