Here is a richly identified photograph of the D. C. Konkel Furniture building in Broken Bow, Nebraska, taken in 1904. A smaller sign above the entrance reads “Dr. R. B. Mullins, Dentist.” The left display window advertises “Konkel & Mullins” carpets, rugs, and linoleums, while the right adds furniture and baby cabs. Three men and a woman pose outside the store beside a baby carriage and a small Diamond wagon.
What makes the photograph particularly interesting are the detailed notes written on the back. The individuals appear to be identified as J. A. Rinear(?), D. C. Konkel, Mrs. D. C. Konkel, and “Uncle Fred Albert,” identified as Mrs. Konkel’s brother. A small notation gives the year as 1904, which fits the appearance of the photograph.
A longer note reads: “Grandpa’s furniture store - ground floor. Dad’s & mother’s 2 room apt. 2nd floor and Dad’s dental office.” Another note refers to an “interior - furniture store pic.” A companion interior photograph, apparently from the same family group and also in this collection, appears to be the image referenced here. Finally, a note near the bottom identifies Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Konkel as the man and woman standing to the right of the doorway.
