Dayton, Ohio Flood on Fourth Street, 1913Description
This large matted photograph, approximately 12 x 14 inches, shows downtown Dayton, Ohio, during the Great Flood of March 1913. The view looks west on Fourth Street. Signage identifies B.L. Lehman, “The Plumber,” at 134 West Fourth Street, with the neighboring Besko restaurant at 136 West Fourth.
A handwritten note on the back reads: “the flood was in 1913 or 15. Dayton Ohio. dam broke.” The date can be narrowed to 1913, and the same view appears in archival collections and was reproduced in postcard form.
The lower right bears the insignia of The Hermes Art Co. of Dayton. The image was also reproduced in postcard form, while this example survives as a substantially larger mounted photograph.
Because of its size, I scanned the photograph in two overlapping sections on a flatbed scanner and merged them into one image using Photoshop.Made/Created
