Two men, two women, and a child pose outside a small lumber and fuel office in Saugatuck, Michigan. A large hand-painted sign across the front advertises “LUMBER / LATH AND SHINGLES / WOOD AND COAL.” Stacks of cut wood stand beside the larger building immediately behind the office.
A later inscription on the back reads: “"Charlie + [illegible] Ludwig / about 1900 / At Sagutuck [sic] Mich." The second given name is difficult to decipher. The inscription appears to identify at least one of the people pictured as Charlie Ludwig.
The Ludwig surname appears in Saugatuck records around this period, including a Charles P. Ludwig. Whether he or any other local Ludwig was connected to this business remains unknown and may provide a path for future research.
