Saloon Interior (Varsity Inn) – Blandon, PennsylvaniaDescription
This weathered saloon interior is identified on the back (in later handwriting) as the Varsity Inn in Blandon, Pennsylvania. Two patrons and a bartender stand at a curved wooden bar, backed by a simple bottle display and period advertising, including Lash’s Bitters, Kil-A-Kol, and Son-O-Cuba cigars. A small sign reading “MINORS” hangs above the bar, with additional text no longer legible.
A partially obscured sign behind the bar reads “For Prothonotary,” referencing William G. Hintz, who was campaigning for that office in Berks County in 1917. The most informative detail appears on the back wall: a poster advertising an “Annual Picnic” at nearby Jacksonwald, Pennsylvania on Sunday, August 19, 1917, featuring musical entertainment by “30 Men 30.” Given the proximity of Blandon to Jacksonwald, these details place the photograph in 1917.Made/Created
