About twenty-six men, women, and children posed outside the Whittaker Bros. Canning Co. in Niangua, Missouri. Several held baskets that appear to contain produce, possibly tomatoes, while crates surrounded the group outside the shed-like canning structure. A small boy sat atop stacked crates beside rows of canned goods. A sign above the building identified the operation, and the photograph also bore the mark “McCormack Photo,” likely added to the negative or print itself.
The handwritten notes on the back appeared to identify several people in the image by first name only, though much of the writing was difficult to decipher. Newspaper references placed a Whittaker family farm in Niangua by 1913, and given the town’s small size, there was a strong likelihood the reference related to this same family or operation.Made/Created
