a) The Croix de Guerre medal, a French military decoration, awarded to Minnie "Ma" Burdick for her service in WWI. Bronze medal: Cross with crossing swords and a shield in the middle. Red and green vertical stripe ribbon with bronze palm attached.
b) Croix de Guerre box: rectangluar, green box with lid. The outline of the Croix de Guerre medal is printed in silver on the lid.
The Croix de Guerre is a French military decoration created in 1915 to reward individual or group feats of bravery. The medal can be bestowed on any member of the armed forces, French citizens, and foreigners; each medal has different levels of distinction.
Ma received her Croix de Guerre for "perseverance in baking pies and conducting gospel services under German shell fire." The bronze palm you see attached to Ma Burdick's medal designates a mention of her in an army-wide military dispatch. She was the only Salvation Army worker to receive this distinguished honor.Acquisition
