Description

Navy blue wool dress. Closes over left shoulder, down front left side, and down left hip with snaps. Partly attached matching fabric belt at waist. Long sleeves end in pointed fold over cuffs that are trimmed with black woven tape. Collar edge is also bound with the same woven tape. Neck also features snaps (three in total, one missing at front) which are sewn to the dress and allow for a collar to be attached. Dress features red Salvation Army officer epaulets which look like they may have been added after the dress was produced. The seam at the top of the armseye has been either opened to allow for epaulet to be added or was left open to allow for proper positioning of epaulet. The thread that sews the epaulet into the seam and closes the seam is similarly colored to other sewing thread used in this dress, but is of a different weight. The buttons which normally adorn the pointed ends of the epaulet are missing. Interior seam bears a small white tag which reads "B. Emilson." This stands for Bergliot Emilson, who was commissioned as a Salvation Army officer in June 1948.

Provenance

Notes

Last Owner: Strand, Bergliot (nee. Emilson) Dress found in collection. Found with a Major's collar which does not really fit the dress. It is quite possible that the collar either belonged to Bergliot Emilson Strand and was worn with another uniform or the collar may be completely unrelated to this dress and person.
