Description

Black and white horizontal photograph with printed caption "FRENCH '220' MORTAR IN ACTION." The photograph shows a rocky landscape with low trenches. There are six men in military uniform, three of whom are standing directly behind a large calibre mortar of French design. Smoke comes out of the mortar and blosed into the background behind it. The caption may be partially incorrect -- It may have meant to refer to the French "240 mm Trench Mortar," which was used in siege warfare on the Westerm Front to destroy enemey strongpoints, bunkers, and other "hard" targets."
