Description

Drum, used by the Grand Rapids (Heritage Hill), Michigan corps band. The hitting face of the drum has the church name printed in dark blue, wrapping around the top edge, with a red Salvation Army crest with an eagle printed below. The caption, First Commissioned Band - USA 1884, is printed below in dark blue. The other side of the drumhead has the manufacturer, Ludwig, information. The shell of the drum is thin wood and has tension cords looping through metal bolts on each head. Leather and metal sliders on each section of cord allow for tension adjustment which affects the sound. The donor, Lt. Col. Marvin Dahl, restored this drum, which belonged to the 1st Commissioned band - 1884 Grand Rapids, (now Heritage Hill Corps) MI. The drumhead was replaced with plastic, due to the cost of lambskin.
