Description

Black and white photograph with printed caption, "NICE -- GROTTE ET MONUMENT" (English: "Nice, Cave and Monument). The photograph was taken in Le Jadrin Albert 1er (The Albert 1st Garden). It shows a pond with three swans and a short fence in front. The far side of the lake shows what looks like a terrace with palm trees on top and cave openings below. In the background is the Monument du Centenaire (the Centennial Monument). Printed to the right of the caption is "G. J photo." Le Jadrin Albert 1er (The Albert 1st Garden) was developed in the late 1800s and located at Nice's city center. In 1792, the First French Army captured the County of Nice, making it part of France. In recognition of this annexation, this Centennial Monument by sculptor André-Joseph Allar was erected 100 years later in the Albert Garden. The bronze winged Victory signifies loyalty and the marble statues below (a girl hugging a woman) represent allegiance to France.
