Black and white photograph with printed caption, "672 NICE -- LA JATEE PROMENADE G. J. PHOT." The photograph shows a walkway lined with trees and benches along a body of water. Two men stand in the walkway and one man sits on a bench. In the background, a pier extends out into the water. On the pier is a large palace-like building with an architecture style of the East.
"La Jatee Promenade" is roughly translated to "The Pier Promenade" in English. The Palais de la Jetee, or the palace of the pier, was a pier and casino constructed in the late 1800s. It was considered to be a true representative of the Belle Epoque, a Western period characterized by optimism, regional peace, economic prosperity, an apex of colonial empires, and technological, scientifc, and cultural innovations. During World War I, the building was requisitioned and converted into a convalescent center for the wounded. At the end of the war it was posted to the American YMCA and used in 1918-19 as a center from which American troops left to return to the Unites States.Acquisition
