Black and white horizontal photograph with the printed caption, "388 NICE - PROMENADE DES ANGLAIS C. J. phot." The photograph shows a wide boulevard along a coastline. The boulevard is filled with people, many of whom are walking or sitting along benches that line the walkway. Some people hold umbrellas. Palm trees line one side of the walkway and a short iron fench separates the other side of the walkway from a small strip of beach along the water. A pier extends out into the water and on the end is a palace-like structure, built in what looks like an architecture style of the East. In the background there are buildings and mountains.
Built 1920-1924, the promenade was finance by and used by the English, as the coast of Nice was a popular British tourist area. The building on the pier is called the Palais de la Jetee, or the palace of the pier, and was a casino constructed in the late 1800s. It was considered to be a true representative of the Belle Epoque, a Western period characterized by optimism, regional peace, economic prosperity, an apex of colonial empires, and technological, scientifc, and cultural innovations. During World War I, the building was requisitioned and converted into a convalescent center for the wounded. At the end of the war it was posted to the American YMCA and used in 1918-19 as a center from which American troops left to return to the Unites States.Acquisition
