Description

World War I United States Army "Victory" rainbow bar ribbon pin. Rectangular brass pin with hardware attached horizontally to back. Front of the pin is covered with a horizontally-grooved ribbon. The ribbon has a double rainbow pattern, with each color striped vertically, starting with a red/orange stripe in the middle, surrounded by yellow stripes, surround by green stripes, then light blue stripes, then indigo stripes, and ending with violet stripes on each end of the pin. Engraved horizontally on back of pin is either "B C(?)" or "ZB C(?)" and below: "BTE S. G. D. G." The colors and their arrangement on the bar indicate that this is a World War I Victory Award given to the United States American Expeditionary Forces (given retroactively beginning in April of 1921). Also called the "Inter-Allied Victory Medal", it was given to other Allied forces (France, Greece, Italy, etc.) during World War I. Some rainbow bars were British made, but the engraving on the back of this pin might indicate it was made in France. "BTE S. G. D. G" stands for "Brevete Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement" (French), which in English means "patented without guarantee of the goverment".
