Scope and Content

Photo postcard. The black and white image depicts a group of Salvation Army women making doughnuts (donuts) during World War 1 in France. Two women, on the right, appear to be rolling out dough on a wood table. The logo for the publisher is printed on the front of the table. On the left, a man is standing in front of a steaming pot and stirring it. A wood table and two women stand behind them. All of the people are wearing helmets and carry gas masks in bags around their necks. The area surrounding them is heaped with rubble. The caption, "Salvation Army making Doughnuts under bombardment of German Guns, Front Line France" is printed in black along the bottom edge. The back of the postcard has a thin line delineating the correspondence and address sections. The line is topped with a triangle that has the letters "C" and "U & U". In the upper left, "Post Card" is printed in a bold font with "The Chicago Daily News G.J. Kavanaugh War Postal Department" under.
