Description

2018.18.2a-c: a - wooden box b - box lid c - stamp East Asian seal, or chop mark, possibly belonging to Cecil Goodwin (Burdick), as the other seal/chop mark was hers. Seal is rectangular, made of a dark red marbled stone. The stamp plate is square with a carved relief of two Chinese seal script characters. The stamp handle ends in a decorative three-dimensionally carved dog(?). The seal is stored in a rectangular, dark wooden box with a slide-on lid. Inside is a square section of red paste. This was likely a travel gift or souvenir. It's exact origin is unknown, though likely China. It is unknown whether it is a souvenir acquired from Cecil's own travels or whether it was given to her as a gift.
