Description
Woman's Salvation Army uniform, navy blue wool consisting of a high collared, long-sleeved tunic (2012.100.1a) and matching jumper with floor length skirt (2012.100.1b). Tunic is fitted to the body, approximately knee length and closes with over 20 buttons spaced closely together. It has two Salvation Army brass colored metal insignia sewn to the collar positioned on either side of the center front opening. The insignia are in the shape of the letter S and have the negative space carved out to form the text "Bloed en Vuur" (Blood and Fire in Dutch) inside the letter S. The jumper closure is of centered on the left front side and closes with several snaps. There is a bag pocket at the bottom edge of the closure. The jumper is sleeveless and also semifitted. The hem is edged with maroon brush braid trim. Both the tunic and jumper are lined in black cotton.
The uniform was purchased by the donors while traveling through Holland. Its style is consistent with uniforms worn by Salvation Army officers and soldiers in the United States, c. 1880-1920. Based upon the cut of the sleeves and shoulders, this uniform likely dates to the 1890s.
