11,510 - EXTRA LARGE FLOOR RECEPTACLEDescription
11,510 - EXTRA LARGE FLOOR RECEPTACLE. Acorn Offering giving box.
Note the shaped, carved wooden acorn on top of box lid. During the early 1900's many churches practiced a Fall season "Acorn" offering. This is the only known acorn offering box in the world.
Parishioners and children; whole families would locate large acorns and cut them open to insert a dime or two. The acorn top would be affixed with glue back on the acorn holding inside the dime(s). At prescribed times parishioners would bring their "acorns of coins" to deposit inside the box. A common theme of the time was "Acorns to large oaks grow." A little from many is much in stewardship practice.
During lean times of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, this was a creative, inventive manner to enlist laypeople to join together in giving consistently, even though expected gifts were anticipated to be small.Collection
