15,500 - LARGE ALMS CHARITY PLATE.
This artifact is a large, metal alms plate with dual handles. In the center is a metal pressed image of the New Testament centurion Cornelius. Cornelius was noted in the scriptures as a generous man noted for his giving to the local synagogue in the Joppa (now Jaffa, Israel) town area.
Alms plates like this 24 inch across artifact, were used to collect money, change, and small handicraft items made for the poor or needy. The alms plate was taken around the church pews where it was large enough to hold non-monetary items such as gloves, mittens, socks, or other items that could be used by the poor. Even food items such as bread or baked goods were often contributed and then immediately distributed after the service.Collection
