Description

15,501 - LARGE ALMS AND CHARITY PLATE. Hand punched, brass plate with illuminated side half-circles depicting Adam and Eve, and the tree of life in the center image. See also entry 15,500. Alms plates like this large 24 inch across artifact, were used to collect money, change, and small handicraft items made for the poor or needy. The alms plate was taken around the church pews where it was large enough to hold non-monetary items such as gloves, mittens, socks, or other items that could be used by the poor. Even food items such as bread or baked goods were often contributed and then immediately distributed after the service.
