1887 - I HOSPITAL SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. AN OUTSIDE ALLIE
A full page color print front cover from Puck Magazine. Dated December 21, 1887. Volume XXII – Number 563. "Remember Hospital Saturday and Sunday."
In the late1800's to 1930's, offerings were taken up in church once a month to support the local doctor and if there, medical clinic or small "hospital". Thus began a tradition of religious institutions or churches supporting or even naming hospitals.
Depiction of a wealthy-coated man in top hat, walking by the church giving box for Hospital Saturday and Sunday, not generous, and resisting giving a donation. Caption:
“Good brother Preacher, the sick and poor
Shall be glad of the alms that you procure
When Hospital Sunday again draws nigh,
And I will wait outside the gate
And remind the neighbor who passes by.”
