19,509 - LANGDON BAKERY WIDOW'S MITE 1884. Classified as RUL OH-Ci 101 Cincinnati, Ohio. Brass merchant token ICG AU53.
Sol Langdon was the owner and proprietor of the Langdon Bakery in Cincinnati, Ohio. A follower of the Layman's Tithing Movement, founded by Thomas Kayne - known as "Layman", Sol decided to create a token to hand out as gifts to patrons of his large downtown baking company; tokens which he hoped would motivate giving and lead to consistent tithing practice in family leaders. The Langdon Widow Mite became that product.
On the reverse side was the word "Murdock" which was the coin designer's last name, and "Cincinnati", the city where the Langdon Bakery was founded. This coin token, not exchangeable for any value, and very small, half of the size of a modern day quarter coin was unique for an amazing trait.
The token contained in a smaller circle on its reverse side, an engraving of the entire Lord's Prayer with the phrase, "smallest ever coined." to this day, no one has ever explained how or who had the skills to mass produce such a small type engraving of such a lengthy verse. This is the primary feature which has made this collectable coin so rare to find in excellent condition.Collection
