1901 – D THE KING RECOGNIZES “TIM” THE CHARITY COLLECTING DOG
This is an original full-page article England's Sketch Magazine. Told is the story of the King of England recognizing Tim a well-known charity collecting dog.
Charity collecting digs were trained to nicely roam amongst town and village people in urban areas of England. They often carried securely-placed, well padded boxes on their backs in which children and townspeople could deposit gifts of coins for charities such as the poor, hospitals, and other local charities. Dogs were trained since their early years as puppies to nicely deal with people and were monitored by local constables and police who were constantly patrolling town streets.
In the evening, charity collecting dogs were rounded up and cared for with water and food. The dogs were licensed as well to keep track of them and their care.
This particular dog, a Griffin, was patronized with gifts from the King himself elevating his status as a symbol of charitable intent to townspeople. The article gives more detail and is one of only 5 known articles explaining this historical phenomena of implementing trained dogs in charitable collection efforts.
