1921 – A LADIES MISSIONS SOCIETY BAG: ST. STEWART BAPTIST CHURCH
Description
1921 – A LADIES MISSIONS SOCIETY BAG: ST. STEWART BAPTIST CHURCH
A near-mint condition, original missionary purse with donation line embroidered in, and accompanying purpose and instruction card. A complete set.
The purpose would be to invite primarily women to a giving party with instructions to give your age amount in pennies up to or beyond the bag’s line for missions. Women would discuss particular mission efforts, and knit and sew additional bags for future collective giving efforts. One of the most unique women's missionary models in history.
The model involved inclusiveness of women across economic levels: rich and poor. Giving by women who were not known to be income generators, but who could bake and collect farm produce and eggs for personal sales to support filling each bag. Collectivism in giving placed the emphasis not on the amount given, but rather, on the concept of "a little given by many, becomes much."
Image sizes are 3 inches by 5 inches for the card, and 3 inches by 3 inches for the bag. Manifest Record: 200736966092
