21,538 - 1939 STORY ENVELOPES 3Description
21,538 - 1939 STORY ENVELOPES 3: "Ravening Wolves".
Offering envelopes produced before income tax was invented served two purposes.
First, to collect weekly Sunday gifts of tithes and offerings from church members and be put in the passed offering plates. Second, the story envelope, new each week, reported a printed story that supported Biblical values and encouraged church commitment and generous giving.
This envelope tells a short story, and you may ask why there is no area to write-in the contributors name and address to record their giving amount. The reason? There was no charitable tax deduction issued to any church member for giving to their church in America. Givers did not receive any tax deduction for personal giving.
Giving for church support truly depended on generosity, sacrifice, was un-rewarded, and not tax deductable, in the years just following the Great Depression and during Dust Bowl of the 30's. Story offering envelopes began to be used in the years after the start of The Great Depression, and continued through the 1960's. Here was a creative example of providing evangelistic outreach during the time of offering worship in church. These story envelopes are incredibly rare to locate today.Collection
