5508 - PENNY A MEAL SELF DENIAL MISSIONS TABLE BANK

Description

5508 - PENNY A MEAL SELF DENIAL MISSIONS TABLE BANK. "Cent A Meal" types of banks were to be placed on family, home kitchen tables. This is an early 1930's, ceramic bank used for the purpose of raising funds across families for the purpose of supporting The Every Creature Missions Crusade. It was not the purpose that was important. Rather, the method of contributing change, or small coins at each family meal was an easy to adopt, family-involved method of raising funds for Christian, mission, or building programs. The youngest family member put small coins in the can at start of each family meal. Large donations were not regularly given in Depression years, and immediately after the Depression. The concept of "a little over time becomes much" prevailed at the time in the years during and after the Great Depression. This highly decorated ceramic bank gives explanation of the purposes of the coins gifted and placed inside. When the bank was full, the banks were picked up or delivered to the recipient address; for this bank, the local church. The treasurers of the local church would then at some future announced date, take all non-opened, collected-back banks to the local bank used by the local church. The bank would unscrew the bottom wing nuts to these small banks and deposit the coins inside. The banks were able to be re-used over and over again, permitting the ceramic bank was cared for and not broken in use. Prayers and small contributions at every meal helped families to commit to prayer the missions they supported, and without pressure, give families a method to contribute a little, consistently. The more families that daily practiced this model, the more funds raised over time.
