Around 1973 Susann met Sister Gertrude in New Orleans at the Larry Borenstein Gallery in the Quarter. Sister Gertrude would perform at Larry's gallery with her guitar and Tamborine. Allen Jaffe and Larry were Sister Gertrude's mentors.
(Preservation Hall has a large collection of Sister Gertrude's work)
As the "Father of Preservation Hall," Larry Borenstein turned his art gallery into a "rehearsal hall" in 1955 for local musicians in his efforts to preserve the music. By 1961 his gallery had morphed into today's Preservation Hall. The Larry Borenstein Art Collection features artists from this era.
