Dear Papa,
Well we are back from our embarkation leave and we had a good time. We went to London as I wrote you in my last letter. On Tuesday we went to Richmond to call on Kirk's friends there. We had a pleasant surprise on leaving that evening, as we were both invited to spend the remainder of our leave with them. On returning to London that evening (as we could not stay there that night, our baggage being at the Imperial) the lights went(?) out [?] our train so informing us that London was having another air raid. We could not hear or see anything but the searchlights. When near(?) London you pass through the underground tubes where you can hear nothing, the worst of the raid happened at Russell(?) Square station we had to walk up the winding stairs to the street as the lights were not running, the tube and [?] were hacked with people [??] and we had great [?] in getting up to the street. On arriving there nothing was [?] seen or heard. We want to bed as it was midnight and just after getting in bed the raid started again. We could see(?) no aeroplanes [?] the clouds but we could hear them and hear the explosions of the falling bombs in another district of London.
On Tuesday I also saw [?] of my old Company who is in the Flying Corps. He has just returned from France. I did not see Art(?) Campbell who is back from France sick because he has left London for the seaside.
On Wednesday Kirk and I went [?] Richmond. The latter(?) is a nice town on the Thames about 20 miles from London. We had a most enjoyable stay there. Everything is so comfortable our(?) [?] home. We ate about 7 [?] a day and there were pear trees in the back yard. We were on the river most of the time as we could get Canadian [?] there. I even resurrected a double(?) paddle the first I have seen in England.
I bought a fleece lining for my trench coat, I am not going to buy a B[?] [???] now, for the waterproof with the [?] fleece lining buttoning inside is enough. The lining cost me $7.50. I have decided that if I am sent to Egypt I will have such a supply of different clothing to buy for that hot climate that the allowances of €5.
