Dear Papa,
Everything has gone O.K. thus far - with several awkward positions as per usual the authorities minced things up. We found when we got to Montreal the next morning that we should have had requisition for meals and didn't have out my signature was sufficient also our Pullman (sleeping car) [?] were no good from Montreal cast because that line is a Canadian Government line. Again my signature sufficed so from Montreal to St. John N. B. where we embark we are living and sleeping comfortably by virtue of my signature.
There are a few other officers on the train - also 10 nurses in their blue lieutenant uniforms. One of the party knew several of them and introduced the rest and we all had a progressive card game followed up with a singing concert. (One of our party is Macqueen who sang all the recruiting songs at Toronto theatres for several battalions, including Hagarty.) We had breakfast this morning at Moncton N.B at the station (again on my signature) we will arrive at St. Johns about 1 O'clock this afternoon. We have been having chicken, goose, turkey, etc for our meals on the train, each man eating about $1.25 worth (on the government which Torey as it has therefore proved of some use)
I hope you got home all right, now papa. Please arrange immediately for Della to come back with you on your trip so you will not be so lonesome and so I will have an easier mind. I wish definite arrangements could have been made before I left. So please make some arrangements like that right away and maybe after Della goes Auntie Augustine will come over for a month or two. I have just this minute realized that you will not receive this letter until your return on Wednesday next but anyway if I wanted to write on the boat you wouldn't hear from me for another week at least.
Now please don't try to live alone papa but get some of the folks to stay with you for several months until you have a good chance to make some permanent arrangement like getting Jim's sister for housekeeper. You will find it a great relief to have somebody else getting the meals and washing up. Goodbye for the present.
