Description

The Leica IIIf Red Dial is the final, most refined evolution of the original "Barnack" Leica design. Named after Oskar Barnack, the inventor of the 35mm camera, this model features a built-in flash sync dial with red numerals, indicating a significantly improved shutter mechanism over the earlier black dial versions. This specific unit is fitted with the legendary Canon 50mm f/1.4, a lens so highly regarded for its "glow" and sharpness that it earned the nickname "The Japanese Summilux." The "Thorium" Tint: Looking through the front element, you can see the gorgeous amber/yellow tint. This is the hallmark of vintage thorium glass. It acts like a permanent "warmth filter," making skin tones look incredibly luminous on film. The Two-Window System: Unlike modern cameras, this Leica has two separate windows on the back: one for focusing (the rangefinder) and one for composing (the viewfinder). It forces a slower, more deliberate style of photography that many artists find addictive. Red Dial Rarity: Because serial #591372 falls into the 1952 production run, it features the improved "standardized" shutter speeds. It's the most reliable version for a photographer who actually intends to burn through rolls of film rather than just letting it sit on a shelf. Bottom-Loading Quirk: the solid bottom plate. There is no back door. You must remove the entire bottom and "drop" the film in. This is why your template cutter is so essential; without a long-trimmed leader, the film will almost certainly snag on the internal pressure plate.
