Description

The Konica Auto S 261 is a unique departure from the typical "point-and-shoot" Instamatic cameras of the 1960s. While most 126 cameras were plastic-lensed and simplified, the 261 was a high-end rangefinder built to the standards of Konica's professional 35mm "Auto S" line. It features a sharp Hexanon 42mm f/2.8 lens and a coupled rangefinder for precise manual focusing, which was very rare for the 126 format. The camera utilizes a CdS electric eye for automatic exposure and a "Flashmatic" system that automatically adjusts the aperture based on the distance when using flash cubes. It was also sold by Montgomery Ward as the "Wards 261." It serves as a prime example of a manufacturer trying to bring professional optical quality to a consumer-grade film format. Because 126 film is no longer mass-produced, these are primarily collected as mechanical curiosities or used by enthusiasts with 35mm-to-126 adapters.
