This lens is a crown jewel of the M42 screw-mount era. Manufactured by the legendary Tomioka Optics (who also built lenses for Carl Zeiss and Yashica), the 55mm f/1.4 is revered for its incredible rendering and "painterly" bokeh. A fascinating technical detail: this lens likely contains thoriated glass (radioactive thorium dioxide), which was used in the late 60s to achieve a high refractive index. Over time, the thorium causes the glass to take on a distinctive yellow/amber tint (visible in the photo). While this acts as a natural warming filter for film, many modern digital users love it for the unique "thorium glow" it adds to portraits. It is a dense, all-metal masterpiece that feels every bit as premium today as it did 55 years ago.
