Description

The Canon AE-1 Program is one of the most famous and successful 35mm SLRs ever made. Building on the massive success of the original AE-1, this "Program" version added a fully automatic exposure mode, allowing the camera to set both the shutter speed and the aperture simultaneously. This made it an incredibly versatile tool for everyone from college students to professional journalists. It features the Canon FD mount and is known for its bright "Laser Matte" focusing screen, which was significantly clearer than the screens in earlier models. Technically, the AE-1 is a "shutter-priority" automatic camera. You select the shutter speed, and the camera’s computer calculates the correct aperture. This particular unit is an early model, paired with a Breech Lock S.C. (Spectra Coating) lens. Unlike the later "New FD" lenses we’ve seen, this one uses a rotating silver ring at the base to secure it to the body. A common issue with this series is the "Canon Squeak"—a high-pitched noise caused by dried-out lubricant in the mirror governor mechanism. If yours sounds like a chirping bird when you fire the shutter, it likely needs a tiny drop of watch oil. Despite this common quirk, the AE-1 Program remains the gold standard for film photography students today due to its perfect balance of manual control and electronic assistance. It is powered by a single 4LR44 6V battery, without which the electronically controlled shutter will not fire.
