Description

This Canon FD 28mm f/2.8 is the quintessential wide-angle lens for the FD system, perfectly complementing the AE-1 and AE-1 Program in your collection. Unlike the "Breech Lock" lenses we saw earlier with the silver rings, this is a New FD (nFD) version. It uses a more modern bayonet mount where the entire lens body twists to lock onto the camera, a design change Canon implemented in 1979 to make lens changes faster and more intuitive. Technically, the 28mm focal length is highly favored by street and landscape photographers. It provides a broad field of view that is wide enough to capture expansive scenes but not so wide that it creates significant fish-eye distortion. The f/2.8 maximum aperture strikes a great balance between low-light capability and a compact, lightweight form factor. A very cool historical detail in this photo is the lens cap. It is a commemorative 1984 Olympic Games cap, celebrating Canon's role as the "Official 35mm Camera" of the Los Angeles Olympics. Canon was a massive sponsor of the games, and these caps were included with many cameras and lenses sold during that era. The lens also comes with its original hard-shell leatherette case, which has protected the optics well over the decades.
