Description

The Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 is arguably the most common and recognizable lens in the history of the FD mount system. This specific version is the "New FD" (nFD) variant, introduced in 1979. Unlike earlier "Breech Lock" versions that used a separate rotating silver ring to attach to the camera, the nFD lens uses a bayonet-style twist mechanism where the entire lens body rotates to lock. This design made lens changes faster and allowed for a lighter, more compact construction using high-quality industrial plastics. Technically, the 50mm focal length is considered a "normal" lens because its field of view closely approximates that of the human eye. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture makes it excellent for low-light photography and for achieving a shallow depth of field with smooth background blur (bokeh). The lens features a green "A" setting on the aperture ring, which is required for the shutter-priority and programmed automation modes found on cameras like the Canon AE-1 Program and Canon T50. Because of its superb sharpness and simple six-element optical design, this lens remains a favorite today. It is widely used by digital photographers who "adapt" it to modern mirrorless cameras; since it is a full-frame lens, it provides excellent coverage and a classic, vintage look that modern digital lenses often lack.
