StandardDescription
This is the lens mounted on Canon AE-1 (Original), featuring the New FD (nFD) all-black bayonet mount. This specific copy is in excellent functional condition, and as you can see in the front-facing photo, the 5-blade aperture diaphragm is perfectly clean, which is vital for the lens to respond quickly during a shot.
The lens is currently fitted with a 52mm snap-on rubber lens hood. These hoods were indispensable for the FD 50mm f/1.8 because the front glass element is quite shallow and sits close to the rim, making it prone to "veiling glare" when shooting toward the sun or bright light sources. The hood also acts as a physical bumper, protecting the filter threads from dings.
Technically, the nFD version of this lens is optically identical to the older breech-lock version but uses more modern plastics in the barrel construction to save weight. This makes it a perfect pairing for the AE-1 series, keeping the overall kit balanced and easy to carry all day. When the aperture ring is set to the green "A", the camera can fully control the exposure, which is why the AE-1 became the go-to camera for a whole generation of students and travelers.Made/Created
