Description

This lens is the Spectra Coating (S.C.) version of Canon's famous "nifty fifty." While you already have a version of this lens in your collection, this specific unit is an excellent example of the Breech Lock design. You can easily identify this by the large silver ring at the base of the lens. To mount it, you hold the lens against the camera and rotate only that silver ring—the lens barrel itself remains stationary. Technically, the "S.C." designation indicates that it uses Canon's earlier multi-coating technology. This gives photos a beautiful "vintage" character with slightly more susceptibility to lens flare compared to the later S.S.C. (Super Spectra Coating) versions. This version (specifically the S.C. II) is lighter than the earliest "Chrome Nose" models but still retains a more substantial, metallic feel than the later plastic-heavy New FD (nFD) versions. The lens features a 6-element, 4-group optical design which provides exceptional sharpness when stopped down and a soft, classic glow when shooting wide open at f/1.8. It has a minimum focus distance of 0.6 meters and is fully compatible with the automatic exposure systems of cameras like the Canon AE-1 and A-1 when the aperture ring is set to the green "A" (or "O" on very early models).
