StandardDescription
The Canon T50 was the first model in Canon's "T-series" and represented a major shift toward automation in the SLR market. Designed to be as simple to use as a point-and-shoot but with the advantage of interchangeable FD-mount lenses, it removed almost all manual controls. The camera features a built-in power winder that automatically advances the film at 1.4 frames per second and an incredibly simple "Program" exposure mode.
Because the T50 was designed for beginners, the top dial only has settings for "Program," "Lock," "Self-Timer," and "Battery Check." It does not allow the user to manually select shutter speeds or apertures (unless using a flash). This philosophy of "Programmed Automation" was meant to appeal to users who found traditional SLRs like the Canon AE-1 too intimidating.
This unit is paired with a Tokina Master Zoom 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5, a versatile third-party lens that covers everything from wide-angle landscapes to standard portraits. To ensure the camera's automation works correctly with this lens, the aperture ring on the Tokina must be set to the green "A" position. The T50 is powered by two standard AA batteries, which are housed in the grip. While it lacks the creative control sought by professional photographers, it remains a charmingly "retro-future" 80s artifact that is very easy for modern film beginners to pick up and shoot.Category
